SOVA, a Suicide prevention organization in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is an over populated Muslim dominant country of South Asian region of the globe. Suicide in the context of Bangladesh is a raising concern and sturdily considered as the leading one social disease. Effects of suicide deeply engulf the living dependants and creates demoralized situation in the long run. SOVA as a leading organization in line with suicide prevention activism in Bangladesh is implementing a suicide prevention project at Jhenidah widely known as a suicide prone area within country. SOVA is going through with five major activities added into the intervention of suicide prevention in Bangladesh. These are –(i) finding triggering factors behind suicide and effects of a suicide cases upon the dependants and neighbors by a comprehensive survey (ii) increasing awareness among the beneficiaries on prevention strategy of suicide (iii) Meeting with school going students with a view to changing their deeply rooted values those are strongly patronizing the patriarchal social structure (iv) Counseling and motivation to suicidal people and suicide provokers and (v) Workshop, Seminar, Sitting with press & printing media concerns in order to influence the duty bearers and policy makers to begin a national strategy to prevent suicide across the country. In the recent time to come we are going to make lobby and advocacy with Policy makers due to bring a proposition into the parliament Meeting on developing a national database on suicide.
In our project area it is frequently happening because of financial ruin of poverty, personality disorder, familial isolation, emotional family problem, unbearable feelings of loneliness, chronic painful disease or mental disorder, cheated by lovers, Wrongly done Physical & mental repression to women in almost all spheres, force marriage, marriage of lovers, beaten or scolded by elder, frustration caused by unemployment, forcedly complied with family decision and harmful effect of early marriage etc. When they undergo much suffering, want to get immediate remove but not cherished to combat against the challenges or problems any longer. All the above mentioned issues create the ground of potential suicide. To prevent suicide SOVA always pay heed to depressed one for turning them away from the risk of suicidal and succeeded a lot with the eulogize from the surroundings. As there is no organization (GO & NGO) in Bangladesh working in suicide prevention, SOVA would like to replicate this suicide prevention strategies all over the country through enjoying sufficient donor supports with a success. |
